Rolo The Brawler Versus The Gliding Headhunter

This is one of a series of concepts I'm making for a character that will appear in a new comic. It didn't fit the more sci-fi setting of the story, but I liked it anyway so I finished it.
The villain is inspired by old-school kaijins from tokusatsu series; I like the contrast between Rolo's ethnic feel and the more modern appearance of his foe.

I guess this is the last drawing I post this year, so see you in 2012 for more stuff by myself, Ciao!

Feeding A Totem With Psychic Orb

In order to keep totems working, a knight and a bunch of ghosts travel around Planet ZZZap to feed them with psychic powered orbs.

As usual, A4 smooth paper, Copic and Posca markers.

I wanted to return to a rougher finish in illustrations and this drawing gave me the chance to play around a little bit. Next thing up is a new comic for a zine coming next year and lots more of stuff!
Stay tuned and buy Detrocboi booklet! Ciao!

Interview For Frizzifrizzi

This is the translation for a small interview that was published in November on the Italian web magazine Frizzifrizzi.

Hello, how old are you, and where do you live? How long have you been an illustrator?

Hello, I'm 26 years old and I'm from Genoa but I'm already travellin' to somewhere else with my mind.
It may seem trite but I've always been drawing, especially because by doing so I can give a shape to my fantasies, its worlds and characters. As for being an illustrator "for real" I've been feeling that way since a couple of years ago.

Pencil or graphic tablet?

Pencil, then fineliners, ballpoint pens, and any kind of marker especially Poscas, Copics and fine tip ones.
I find the spontaneity and the errors of traditional coloration great ways to improve and give more vitality to drawings. I use my computer only when the drawing is complete for a scan and a couple of color adjustments.

What do you do when you're not drawing?

I listen to music, lots of; read books or comics, watch movies, then the things that caught my interest make their way to the drawing sheet in one way or another. I also like to cook.

What's on your drawing desk?

Right now? Obviously drawing sheets and pens, a notebook where I keep ideas for new stories, C.F.'s Powr Mastrs 1 and a small porcelain crocodile.
I try to keep my desk as tidy as I can, but when I draw I can't help but flood it with markers and pens.

How much does a drawing weigh to you?

As much as the sum of everything I had in my mind while doing it.

A book cover you'd like to do, and a movie-poster:

For books I'd pick Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle or Pynchon's Crying Of Lot 49, I worship those books and they influenced me a lot. For the movie, I'd go with Herzog's Aguirre, it'd be a great challenge to recreate the movie's visual power.

An Italian illustrator you like:

Silvio Cadelo is one of my favorite Italian artists.

Untitled, a photo by det.roc.boi on Flickr.
I want to draw more male characters lately, so I've been trying to come up with a few good ideas, this was one of my favorites.
It's funny because I wanted to come up with a Kirby-ish character but in the end looks more like something from MOTU. I kind of like it.

This is a work in progress for the illustration I'm working on these days. I'm really busy dealing with other things so I can't draw very much lately. So expect fewer posts in the coming weeks.
But, I think next week the booklets will be up for sale, I'll keep you posted for that.
Talk soon.

Sketches

A couple of sketches for the long comic I'm working on.
The character was supposed to be the protagonist, I'll redesign her but I like the polka dot mask.
The big stone head is one of the first ideas for the Gate to Blumafuria.

So

Hey everybody, once again I'm really busy working on new illustrations and comics and got almost no time to update blogs and such.
I just finished a storyboard for a new short comic, I'm also writing a longer story and working on a couple of new illustrations.
In other news, Detrocboi booklets will be up for sale soon! Stay tuned for bigger updates, ciao!

Here's the result of most of the last 3 months work.
I've printed a handful of copies of this A5 format booklet, I'm planning to expand it a little, with some new works and maybe print more copies and put it for sale, right now I'm using it as a portfolio.
It contains 3 comics, Dream Fortress, Vampire Hexagons and Heroism Potion, plus 10 full page illustrations, for a total of 30 pages of Zeta Zero Zap psychedelia.

Heroism Potion, pages 1-2

Heroism Potion, pages 1-2 by det.roc.boi
Heroism Potion, pages 1-2, a photo by det.roc.boi on Flickr.

Here are the first two pages for Heroism Potion, I completed the rest today.
I'm taking a short break from comics, I got two or three ideas for illustrations to make while I continue writing a story for a longer and more complex comic. More infos and things to see soon!
The next comic will be in b/w as well but I want to work with higher contrast and maybe go back to a rougher black and white style I used some years ago.

Now

Hello, I just finished drawing Heroism Potion.
It still needs all the work of shading, lightning and the dialogues are still to be added, it should take a couple of days, I hope it's all done before Monday.
After that I'll make some illustration and in the meanwhile I'll be shaping up some new stories, I'm thinking about making a longer one, with a character I sketched up some days ago and with other crazy characters.

I can't show you anything about that, but I may be uploading some character sketches in the following days.

Thursday, 25 August 2011

A quick update.
I'm finishing page three of the new comic, called Heroism Potion, it's going to be six pages in black and white, so far I'm really happy with how it's coming along.
The next pages have a one-on-one fight scene so they're a little tougher than the first ones, lots of dynamism and rubble floating around.
I'll post some sneak peeks soon.

Made this a couple of days ago.
This was originally meant to be a sort-of Tokusatsu cannon wielding heroine, then it became a simple blue skinned girl with a huge crocodile shaped shoulder cannon.

Complete!

Vampire Hexagons is finished, it took me a couple of days longer than I expected, but it's ok, it just needs some editing and it's ready.
I'm taking a few days to draft some ideas, complete some line drawings, make a decent storyboard for the next comic and then start with it.
More news coming soon, expect one for tomorrow, ciao!

Books Books Books

Hello, here's the post about books I spoke about in the last few updates I made here.
In the last weeks I got quite a handful of new books to read or look, I found out I'm going back to be more of a reader rather than a watcher as I was before, mostly because I used to buy more Japanese artbooks and comics than now.
Here's a picture of the things I got since mid-July to now.

I usually buy single things from European sellers and make big stash shipment from Japan to save something on shipping costs.
First book is Arnon's Wanda Et Les Dinosaures, as soon as I saw Arnon's drawing I wanted to get this book, picture a Flintstones remake, with a Lux Interior inspired protagonist getting in trouble with women, cavemen and dinosaur men, and have it drawn by a devout Jack Kirby lover and you get this. Lovely.
Then I bought a cheap copy of Josh Kirby's Garden Of Unearthly Delights, especially for a better look at his Ayeguy's paintings, and they really are amazing.

I'm fond of the classic sci-fi look mixed with organic elements, these pictures have a really unique twist, something like heroic sci-fi. I also love the warm colours and their contrast with cooler shades.
Nothing much to say about Valerian Et Laureline, it's a must read, the best French science fiction comic besides Moebius' ones.
Last Western comic I got is Alfonso Font's Prisoner Of The Stars, an amazing dystopian story about a doomed world and the struggle for a final moment of freedom.
I'm glad there's some reprint of this kind of comics, I'm really hoping in a reprint for Negrete's Cosmopolis.
Then, the big bulk shipment from Japan.
I mostly got tankobons for fantasy manga's. Nobuteru Yuuki's Vaelber Saga has the typical elements of lots of J-Fantasy comics, start in a heroic fantasy world to move on with a more sci-fi setting.
Yuuki's style is amazing, there's a couple of great looking characters like the muscular woman warrior and the half-robotic priestess/queen. I really wish I could understand what happens through the volumes.

Most of Yuuki's published works go for crazy prices, luckily Vaelber Saga's complete run goes for about 500 yen, and it's a great buy if you're into Japanese fantasy.
Next is Masaya Hokazono's Laguna Tsushin, apparently it is a longer series published in one-shot volumes; set in a strange steampunk-ish world.
Hokazono's style is simple but crazy, he reminds me a bit of Hiroshi Masumura's one.

I like the strange characters he often uses as sidekicks, I always liked the type of character with big hats and capes, guess it's a thing from Big Trouble In Chinatown's villains, and Amemiya's Zeiram, of course.
I already spoke about Iblard Monogatari in another post, flipping through the book pages reinforced my impressions, great backgrounds, with a poetic, surreal, feel.
Last manga I got is God Gun Yarou by Hirosuke Kizaki.
Kizaki died at a young age, he made three mangas before dying, one about an aspiring mangaka and the other two with a more fantastic setting.
God Gun Yarou is set on a fantastic railroad, the main character has a magic gun and fights against a quite sadistic lady and her robots.
Kizaki style is very detailed, with a modern shonen manga style filtered through the influences of Tatsuyuki Tanaka and Katsuhiro Otomo, I really enjoyed the drawings and I think I'll be getting is other sci-fi manga, called A.Li.Ce sometime soon.

And finally Choji Maboroshi's doujinshis. Maboroshi worked on some soft erotic mangas, with fantasy settings, and along with them, published these Camel Filter booklets, containing sketches and b/w illustrations.

He's really classic with subjects, looking like a Japanese take on Dungeons And Dragons' universe, what's cool is the high contrast style of his drawings and the armors' designs.
That's it, I'm waiting for my copies of Gang Bang Bong and Demon God to arrive, but I think they're floating in Italy's postal maelstrom and will be delivered next week.
Now a quick lunch and then back to draw, have a great weekend, talk soon!

Back From Wherever I Was...

Hello,
I've been in a full-immersion week of comic colouring, listening to industrial music records from the 80's and struggling with splitting headaches and black outs.
Vampire Hexagons is almost done, I had to slow down a little, but I got back to a good pace the last few days so I'm sure it will be done by Monday or Tuesday at last.
Right after that I'm jumping head first in the new comic, which will be in black and white and will have big brawls and transforming heroines and monsters.
I also made some illustrations' sketches and made some other drawings, there'll be more to see in the next days.

Talk soon, ciao!

Saturday, 6 August 2011

Hello, sorry for the lack of updates, I'm extra-busy working on Vampire Hexagons, I'm expecting to complete it early next week and start right away with another one.
I'm also working on some illustrations and other things.

I got some books  and I wanted to make a post about them, sometime soon.
Talk soon, have a great time, ciao!

Vampire Hexagons' First Page

Not final version of page 1 from my new comic,
I'll upload this one only. I'm keeping the rest to be printed in September along with other stuff. Stay tuned!

Where Am I?

Here's a little update on how I'm going with comics and other stuff.
I'm not going as steady as I wished I was, after finishing Dream Fortress I wanted to take just a little breath, to recollect energy and make some considerations, review some flaws and try not to remake them in the new comic I'm working on.
Then I wanted to start some new illustrations as well, so I sketched some things more than I did while coloring Dream Fortress.
I'm planning to have 3 comics completed before mid-September, along with at least 4 new illustrations, it's gotta be hard so I'm trying to make the whole comic-making process a little faster.
The new comic is storyboarded and most of the pages are already drafted and ready to be developed; I hope I'll be done with full b/w pages early next week, wishing to have the full comic done by mid-August.
Here's a picture of how first page is coming along, I already tried some shortcuts for coloring on this page, I just gotta see it done to see if they really work as I hope they do, but until now they seem to work pretty well.

That's it, I'm back drawing now, I've got a splitting headache and other things on my mind. So it's like working in a trance, a strange one.
I'll be back next week for a couple of post of books, or artists, talk soon!

This is a sketch I made yesterday, I was tired of just coloring and wanted to draw something.
I kind of like it, I'm thinking of work it a little more and reuse it for an illustration, but it's going to happen in quite some time so I just thought I'd share it now.

Update

Hello, I'm almost done with drawing the comic, I sat at the drawing desk days and nights and I think it's going to be complete these days, next week I'm starting to colour it and post every page once it is done.
In the meantime I'm also going to start some new illustrations and draft out something for upcoming new comics, I'm going to have at least four comics ready before September, plus new illustrations and stuff.
Stay tuned, more updates soon, ciao!

What's That?

Could it be the first page of the infamous comic I've been talking about for a while?

You betcha! I'm working on page two today; it's gonna be a six-pages story, I think I'm going to start coloring the first one tomorrow. I'm really excited about how it's coming along. Updates soon, ciao!

Alive!

I'm back at last! I've been really busy during past weeks so I had little time to draw or update anywhere.
In the last couple of days I finally got back at the drawing desk; the illustration I'm working on will be an occasion to recover some things from older works; I'm planning on introducing some lettering in it to express the sounds, something like a one panel comic.
The figures are 99% complete, I gotta start making the background and refine some things here and there.
Here's a small peek at it:

Other things are in the works, new posts coming soon! Ciao!

What's Up

Hello, it's quite some time since my last post.
I got my mind on other things, both good and bad so I just couldn't draw as much as I wished.
Whenever the heat starts rising it sucks away all my energies so I guess I just gotta get used to it and start drawing again at full speed.
I started a new illustration and I'm adjusting the comic's drafts. I'll definitely show you someting next week.
Ciao!

In Color

Found some time to start coloring the drawing, yay!

Guess it's time to buy a new camera, this one has one foot in the grave.

Next One

Hey, not much time to draw lately.
I'm feeling a little frustrated about it; I got lots of ideas to draw but time to do it just flies away; hope it'll be more in the next weeks.
Anyway, I got some pictures of the drawing I'm working on now.

I think this one is going to be crazy.
The gardener one was cool to draw but it wasn't much psychedelic so I have mixed feelings about it, hope this one gets to be a stunner.
Talk soon, ciao!

Gardening

So, good weather is finally back, to celebrate its arrival I drew a lush forest around Zeta Zero Zap's Royal Gardener.
I think the drawing may be ready around tomorrow or wednesday; I got some things to do before focusing on it exclusively.
Here is how it looks so far, my camera makes some color look overly fluorescent, kind of like it.

Have a great time, ciao!

What I'm Up To

Here's a little update about new works.
The remake is only one thing I'm working on right now; I started a new illustration a couple of days ago and I'm already coloring it. I hope I can complete it around Monday.
Here's a sneak peek:

Then, I'm readying everything for the short comics I talked about, I'm thinking about some general, fixed points to develop further.
Since I'm rather new at making comics, expect a quite long time before I can show anything.

For blog matters, I'll make some more artists' posts; next ones are about a Japanese and a British artist, curious? Keep following here and you'll find out who they are.

Ciao!

Remakes

Hello, these are tough days; we're all worried and saddened for the events occuring in Japan; I wish that Japanese people may recover fast from the tragedies that struck them, and that they will eventually rise stronger than before.
And let us hope that what's happening now will be a trigger to stop using nuclear energy as much as possible.

I'm preparing for Bologna's international book fair; I'm going to bring a portfolio with as much works as possible and exhibit a couple of works; I will meet international publishers so it's a great job opportunity.
I started drafts for a couple of illustrations, wishing to complete it by early next week.
Here's the almost done line drawing for the remake of an older drawing, the one popping out of all the pens in the photo.

It's more a redesign, rather than a simple remake; I wanted to update the character with symbols and elements I'm using lately, making it a little more psychedelic and somehow jodorowski-esque.
Then, big news, I'm almost ready to start a small comic, nothing more than 4 or 8 sheets, with a weird, surreal story. I'm setting the highlights in these days.

That's it, now I'll be drawing a little more.

Talk soon, ciao!

It's Ready

Hey, I finished the line drawing for a new illustration. I hope to start coloring it tomorrow, I want to complete this one and start a new one right after because I feel like I'm in a great mood for drawing.
Anyway, the story behind it will be published on the Flickr, if I decide to put it there once it's done. Sometimes I feel like I don't wanna put everything I do on Flickr; but since I cleaned it and removed lots of old stuff, it looks a little empty.
Meh, I guess I'll think about a solution -a voice in my head says "draw more!" that would solve the problem-.

Enough fuss, here's the line drawing.

As you can see, the ducks are different than the one I posted some days ago, there are a couple of things to do in the background but it's pretty much ready. I want to make some more experiments with lightning in this one.

That's it, check these cool songs by shoegaze band Weekend, I love Monday Morning's haunty introduction.
Talk soon, ciao!

New Drawing Ahead

Hello.
I got some time to draw lately, so I started a new drawing, it's the one with the duck soldiers from the previous post; I just drew the maincharacter and I am now working on a portion of the background; I'll make a scan of it once I'm done with these parts.

I'm going to blog about another of my favorite artists sometime soon, tomorrow I think.

Talk soon, ciao!

Thursday, 17 February 2011

Hey!

Hello, I've been lacking time for updates; been quite busy lately.
So, I got a couple of projects up: I started a new drawing for ZZZ today; I made an ultra-quick sketch , just to get a general idea and then tried a couple of ideas for characters, here's one sketch I like more than others.

I gotta work on it a little bit more to make it less Disney-ish, but the idea of a duck soldier has been floating in my brains for a while, so here it is.
I'm also thinking about making a background to a couple of drawings I made earlier.
Then I want to try to submit an illustration to an art blog, but it's a long run and I may talk about it later.

I'm going to post more next week, I promise! Have a great weekend, ciao!

Update on Flickr!

Hey, I completed the Cyclops' illustration, I'm very satisfied with it, check it by yourselves here.

I also uploaded Wow! on Flickr to boost the voting, but since it is Facebook based and I don't have a facebook account to spread the word, I guess it'll not be a success, whatever. I just want to focus on drawing now!
More news to follow, talk soon, Ciao!

Skull Defekts - Peer Amid

Skull Defetks' new album Peer Amid is my favorite listen lately; it has all the things I like to find in a record: atmosphere, psychedelia, noise and pounding circular drum rhythms that blow my mind away.
I suggest, if you liked the previous music videos I've linked, to check the whole record; when you reach the final track you'll be very happy and your ears will smoke!

Wow!

Hey, sorry for the lack of updates; I've been busy completing the submission for the contest; you can see the results here and, if you want you can vote for my superheroine by clicking the blue button.
Once the contest is over I'll upload the drawing with better resolution on flickr, in the meantime I hope I can finish the cyclops' illustration and start some new drawing as well.

Now go and vote for me!

The other drawing is okay for coloring, I'll start it as soon as I can.

See you soon, ciao!

Almost There

Hey, I found time to go on with the drawing; there isn't much to do before it's good to go for coloring; I just wanted to post a snippet of it, I thrown another character in it; it's a guardian Smokey, something like the Holy Smokes from another illustration, and he/she/it is supposed to save the young lady from the Cyclops' grasp, will he/she/it succeed in the perilous task?

I'm going to start coloring it as soon as I can, hope it will be done in a week or so.
Today it's Chrome's Planet Strike time, enjoy! Talk soon, ciao!

Favorite Artists: Ryuichiro Kutsuzawa

A long time ago, when I first discovered Katsuya Terada, I used to search the web for pictures of his works, at the time I did not own any of his artbooks and I discovered a magazine called Comickers, with a wonderful cover, it did not look much like Terada's style, but he was credited in the magazine so I just kept wondering who the cover artist may have been.
Then some years later, I started collecting the magazines called SMH and DDD, and there he was, the mystery artist, featured on the magazines with comics and illustrations. Ryuichiro Kutsuzawa!
I then got the Comickers issue with his cover and there was some more works inside; Terada was also there with some older drawings and a photo of LOTS of his sketches scattered around, but Kutsuzawa totally shocked me, on every magazine that had his work published.

I love his style, the blend of realistic drawing, ethnic imagery, sci-fi armors and crazy weapons, some of his characters had huge pliers as weapon, he's one of my top artists and a constant inspiration to do better.
He took part in many projects, worked on some games for Saturn, like Panzer Dragoon and Wachenroder, PSX's Front Mission Alternative and PC's Rasetsu Xan and made some comics and novel covers; then he disappeared, there hasn't been new works and as far as I understood he now teaches at university, in Osaka.
I managed to get almost all of his published work, but I wish that something new will pop out, maybe a full collection of his works, an artbook, some new character design, it's a pity that a talented artist like he is doesn't have the chance to do something, man, if I were a game designer I would make a game with Kutsuzawa as character designer! He's great, period.

Here is the infamous Comickers' cover, my first contact with his work, how cool is that?
One thing I really like is that he tends to draw common people with those fantastic outfits that make them look like workers from a not so far future, he's like a socialist sci-fi artist.
The other picture is the last one I found, it's a cover for a fantasy novel.

Ryuichiro, please come back! We love you!

New Steps

So, I found some time to proceed a little further with the new illo; not very much, but unfortunately things will be like this for some time.
I'm posting it, hoping I'll be able to show something more this week; I just gotta make the background then it's ready for the markers.

I'll try and start another one soon, I got an idea floating around my head and I want to fix it on paper as soon as I can.

And as usual, here is a link to a favorite song of mine, this time by Sun City Girls, enjoy!

Start Of Year

Hey, hope 2011 has begun in a great way.
I spent the last days shaking off all of the holidays big meals and celebrations; now I'm ready to start!

I just got a couple of books' shipments, one from Japan and one from Amazon.
The Japanese one is a bunch of artbooks: Redline Illustrations, which I haven't looked much yet because I want to see the movie first as soon as a translation pops out, then Shining Force III Artbook with LOTS of cool designs and ideas for characters, Elemental Gearbolt World Guidance it's a visual collection from a weird gunpoint game for PSX, set in a cyber fantasy world, the majority of the design is done by an interesting artist called Hitoshi Yoneda.

The last artbook is a collection of design from Front Mission's first episode, characters by Yoshitaka Amano and mechas by Kow Yokoyama (I bought it especially for Yokoyama's mech buildups).
There were some doujinshis too in the box, three of them by Atsuji Yamamoto, one of my favorite manga artists, a couple from his Arnis series and one with miscellaneous short comics and two volumes of the collective doujinshi Thinking Battalion with really great "hey look how early 90's Japanese fantasy we look like" characters.

The box from Amazon had  three novels inside: Breakfast Of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, Empire Of The Sun by J.G. Ballard and Thomas Pynchon's V.
I recently read some Vonnegut's novels and fell in love with them, so I'm curious to read more, I love his blend of science fiction, social criticism and anti-war themes; but I'll start off reading Ballard's Empire Of The Sun because I looked for it for quite some time and I'm impatient.
I'll keep Pynchon at the end; I'm a bit stressed right now and his novels require a huge load of attention.

Well, I guess that's all for now, I made a lot of sketches for places and new drawings, but since I'm going to be busy for the next days for work matters I guess there won't be any progress with the illustrations, as soon as I got something worth showing from ZZZ I'll post here for sure.

Talk soon, ciao!
